2002 Air Cleaner Mods

Adding Relays for Headlights

I changed my stock Solex carburetor to a Weber but wanted to stay with the stock air cleaner setup. This is how I went about making the modifications:

I heard several different ways that the air cleaner housing could be modified to work with a Weber. I chose to buy an adapter made by Weber and make the necessary modifications to the base of the air cleaner housing. I purchased mine through 2002 Haus in San Luis Obispo CA.
The stock Solex carb is taller than the Weber (32/36 and 38/38), but once the adapter is mounted, the Weber setup ends up around 3/4" taller at the air cleaner resting point.
The stock air cleaner housing will mount on top of the Weber adapter, but clearance underneath the hood prevents it from being used this way. Here's what the underside of the air cleaner housing looks like stock.
Taking the flange off of the housing drops the air cleaner down about a 1/2". I removed it by cutting the flange into small pieces, tearing them off with pliers, then used a grinder to smooth out the surface. It was then cleaned and painted.
The next step is to cut the rubber gasket to about half its original height. Here its shown before and after cutting.
That's all it takes. When the modification is done this way, the final height of the air cleaner housing is approximately 1/4" higher than the stock setup. This worked out fine on the '76 2002 I made these mods for.
